First for Women

Insurance companies consider men under the age of 25 a higher car insurance risk than older insureds and female clients, which has given rise to 1st for Women; the only insurance company in South Africa to market insurance products exclusively to women. Beginning as a car insurance provider, First for Women have broadened their products to include home, business and life cover.

First for Women car insurance

Like other direct short-term insurance companies, First for Woman provide third party, third party, fire and theft, and comprehensive car insurance. Third party car insurance covers the damage you may cause to third parties’ property. This does not cover damage to your own vehicle if you caused the accident, nor does it cover you for theft or hijacking.

Third party, fire and theft includes cover for theft and hijacking, but not accidental damage caused to your own vehicle. First for woman’s comprehensive cover includes all of the above and damage to your own property. It is compulsory for financed vehicles.

On top of car insurance, First for Women offer other vehicle insurance, including motorbikes, caravans, trailers, watercraft and off-road vehicles, if you’re such a woman. Included in these products are certain benefits such as medical expenses for motorbike and off-road accidents (to the value of R20 000 and R5 000 respectively).

First for Women home insurance

For the structure of the home, namely the fixed asset, you will require a buildings insurance policy. For the contents of the home, First for Woman provide a home insurance policy, which covers the movable items in the home for theft and accidental damage. It also includes your guests’ belongings, handbags, money, and locks and keys. What’s more, first for women’s home insurance includes cover for groceries spoiled as a result of power outages and pet insurance for veterinary bills.

Like other direct insurance companies, First for Women require homeowners to insure all their home contents to be fully insured. If you do not insure all your home’s assets, then your cover for individual items will be underinsured. If your home contents are valued at R100 000, for example, and you only insure them for R50 000, it means each asset is only 50% insured. So should your TV get stolen, even though it’s valued at R7 000, less than R50 000, First for Women will only pay out R3 500 as your contents are only 50% covered.
