Vodacom to sell short-term insurance

Sunday, 05 February 2012 08:45

Telecom giant Vodacom received a license by the Financial Services Board to sell short-term insurance products direct to the public. The move will diversify Vodacom’s revenue and make an already competitive insurance market even more competitive when the products are launched. According to Vodacom’s spokesperson, the company previously had to sell insurance products through third parties, but now gets to sell it direct.

Their third party insurance includes cover for handsets, laptops and tablets. The new license allows them to sell short- and long-term insurance products, as well as funeral cover. According to the company, they will begin with short-term insurance products within the next few years and then grow that section of the business in the long-term. It has not yet been decided whether or not the group would go direct to the public or through a brokerage.
