Tips on Maintaining Your Home Insurance and Contents Insurance - 11 Aug 2009 09:14

The number of household insurance policies available are as prolific as the insurance providers themselves. There are generic things you can do, however, to make the most of your home insurance policy no matter which provider you’re with.

Keep your policy up to date. When replacing old items, such as appliances, or upgrading equipment such as computers and cameras, ensure that this is reflected in your policy as well. Also make sure that the policy reflects the current retail value of the items insured. The cost to replace these items increases over time.

It’s also a good idea to retain all receipts of expensive or special items as proof of purchase. Photographs of these items can help to prove ownership as well, but keep these and an inventory of items at a secure location away from the home where they cannot be damaged by fire.

Maintain your security system. If your security system is not in working order they may reject your claim. Better security also reduces your premiums, so update this when you can.

Other risks can be avoided as well with good maintenance of your home. The structure itself should be maintained to prevent damage caused by wear and tear or fire. Claiming on your policy will increase your risk as a client and thus increase your premiums.

Remember that insurers assess your risk as a client. Wherever possible, improve your risk profile and update your profile. The fewer risks you pose to the insurer the cheaper your insurance cost will be.
