Santam to contribute to the climate debate - 12 Aug 2009 09:21
Recently, the South African short-term insurer, Santam, has joined the ranks of ClimateWise to show support for engaging in the global debate of climate change. As a member of ClimateWise Santam will have a say at the United Nations climate change negotiations in December in Copenhagen, Denmark this year.
The first African insurance company to ratify the group via membership, Santam hope to contribute to the global exchange and have a positive impact on their clients. The climate crises, notes Andrew Torrance, Chairman of Climatewise, demands a change in the way companies and governments are handling the global economy. Presenting a risk to the economy, the issue of global warming must be addressed by those in the position to influence change.
Executive Head of Risk Services, Hendri Nigrini was quoted as saying that “climate change cannot be ignored or avoided” and that Santam “want to work together with [the ClimateWise group] to address the risks”. Learning from link-minded peers, Santam hope to reduce the risk of environmental disaster as both an insurer, and a member of society.
Insurance companies from across the globe are realising the need to effect change and will influence the debate on climate change to make sure this happens.
