Laptop Insurance Exclusions
Tuesday, 22 September 2009 16:01
Insuring your mobile, portable possessions is a high risk for your insurance company, which, instead of increasing the premium to an unaffordable rate, they reduce by imposing certain restrictions on what can and cannot be claimed for. One of the most commonly insured and higher risk items is your laptop and is subject to the following exclusions.

While it may seem obvious, damage that could have been prevented by taking good care of your laptop is often an exclusion. This means damage caused by ironing, moth or vermin are not reason for claiming. The converse, however, is also true – damage caused by cleaning will not be covered.

Similar to car insurance, if you are insured for personal use and the laptop is used, lost or damaged because of business use, it’s excluded.  Make sure that you and your insurer understand for what the laptop is being used.

If the computer crashes (known often as ‘deerangement’), you will be covered, but only if the reason for the crashing of the laptop is external, such as lightning or power surges. If the laptop crashes in the course of its use, it won’t be covered.

Consequential damage is not included in your portable possession insurance. This means that all the information on the hard drive that was lost with the machine, is not covered. This makes backing up your laptop more important.

When taking out portable possession insurance for your laptop make sure you know what the exclusions are. Some insurers provide less exclusions given that certain requirements are kept regarding transporting of the laptop, care, storage etc. Make sure that you compare portable insurance coverage accurately by comparing the exclusions as well.
