How To Insurance: Covering your home |

The risk of losing your home in a fire, earthquake, flood or explosion may not be high, but it’s not a risk you want to take on yourself. This underscores the importance of home insurance. How To Insurance will discuss what aspects of home insurance to consider to make sure your home is adequately covered in the event of total loss.
Cover all likely perilsDifferent insurance companies will cover different perils. The more perils they cover, the more expensive the insurance premium will be. While covering your home for the most perils reduces your risk of loss, it can become expensive. At the very least, cover the likely perils your home is at risk of. If your home is below a floodline or near a lake or dam, then it must be covered for flooding. If it is near a hill or mountain, then it should be covered for subsidence. Fire and explosion are standard perils covered in a home insurance policy.
Cover the cost to rebuildThe amount that you cover your home for should be more than the current value of the home. It should include the cost to rebuild in the event that the home is completely destroyed. This should include hidden costs such as rubble removal and land filling. While most home insurance companies no longer cover the home for its value plus an undetermined amount to rebuild, but the value of the home plus 25% to rebuild.
Cover liabilityHome insurance should include a liability insurance policy, such as general liability. This policy protects the home owner from any claims of damages and personal injury by third parties who may suffer such on your property. Liability insurance covers legal fees and medical fees should someone suffer injury on your property.
Cover home contentsA home insurance policy only covers the structure of the house and any fixtures, such as swimming pools, tennis courts, driveways, garages and geysers. If the movable contents inside the home are destroyed with the home, then the home insurance policy won’t cover them. For this reason, you should complement a home insurance policy with a home contents insurance policy. This covers all movable possessions for the same perils as the home insurance as well as for theft.
