What Type of Car Insurance To Get - 12 Aug 2009 09:15
Depending on what you use your vehicle for will determine what type of car insurance to get. Most insurers will recommend comprehensive insurance to cover all your bases, which is usually the best way to go, but what if you only use your vehicle to go off-road? Here’s a breakdown of the different types of car insurance.
Comprehensive Insurance Cover
As the title suggests, this type of insurance covers you in pretty much any event pertaining to your vehicle. If you are the owner of a new vehicle, you shouldn’t think twice about getting comprehensive. This covers the costs of the damage or loss of the vehicle in the event of accidental damage, theft, hijacking, damage or injury to third parties and their property and fire. This also covers vehicle accessories, such as radios and CD shuttles.
Third-party Insurance Cover
This is recommended for everyone with a vehicle and is compulsory for anyone buying a new car on credit. This covers damage and injury to other people and their property or vehicles. If you accidentally cause an accident, your insurer will pay for the damage to the other person’s vehicle. If they claim damages from you, you’re covered. If you’re involved in an accident and you are not the guilty party, this type of insurance won’t cover you. Remember, third parties can hold you legally liable for damages, so even without third party insurance cover you will have to pay.
Third-party, Fire and Theft
Again, as the name suggests, this type of insurance cover protects you from claims made by third parties, damage in the event of a fire, lightning or an explosion and in the event that the vehicle is stolen. If you live in an area with a high crime rate this is a better option to go for than the Third-party only. This however does not cover your vehicle appliances.
Off-road Vehicle Insurance
If you take your vehicle off-road for trips to Mozambique or in the bush, this is the insurance for you. It covers damage to your vehicle while trekking through the wildest parts of Africa, which would otherwise be considered non-accidental damage. If you are insured for comprehensive and would like to go off-road with your vehicle, make sure your policy caters for this. Most insurers will add damage to off-road vehicle accessories and cover you for most if not all SADC countries.
