Motor insurance

Thursday, 19 January 2012 09:53

Motor insurance, although refers to car insurance, covers anything with a motor, including motorbike insurance and watercraft insurance. It often includes pulled vehicles as well, such as caravans and trailers, but these are usually separate policies from an auto insurance company.

Motor insurance for cars

Motor car insurance comes in three sizes: third party, third party, fire and theft, and comprehensive insurance. Third party only covers damage that you may cause to other vehicles or third party’s property, while third party, fire and theft includes cover for theft and hijacking, explosions and fire damage. The biggest difference between third party, fire and theft and comprehensive insurance is that comprehensive cover includes damage to your vehicle. That is, if you are involved in an accident, the damage to your vehicle will be covered.

Motor insurance for cars is specifically for passenger vehicles. For larger vehicles, such as buses or trucks, a specialist motor insurance policy is required.

Motor insurance for bikes

Whether you have a scooter or a superbike, you can cover it for damage and theft under a motor insurance policy for bikes (or motorcycles). More than just the bike, some insurance companies offer cover for accessories and biking gear as well, given the risks associated with these. Some insurance companies also provide 24-hour roadside assistance, tyre damage, as well as personal accident cover (for medical expenses) and mechanical breakdown cover.

Motor insurance for watercraft

Watercraft insurance is a personal short-term insurance product which protect privately owned sea-faring vessels from accidental damage, theft, hijacking, fire, explosion, earthquake, storm, hail, flood and snow. The watercraft is covered in its entirety, that is the hull, motors, equipment, standard fittings and accessories, and machinery.

Given that watercraft are often not limited to the borders of a country, that is, they are frequently taken cross country or to specific locations, most watercraft insurance covers the craft in most SADC countries.

While motor insurance does cover all motor vehicles, whether you require a specialist insurance policy for your vehicle or not may depend on the use. Minivans used for personal use can be insured under a private car insurance policy, while those used for business purpose must be insured under taxi or business insurance.
