Do you have special perils included in your car insurance? - 23 Apr 2010 11:29

A peril, unlike a hazard, refers to the actual source or cause of a loss, such as a storm, fire, explosion etc. Perils must be insurable and stipulated in your cover in order for you to be covered for it. Your cover should stipulate exactly which perils you are insured against as well as stipulating which perils you are not covered for. These perils you are not covered for are “excepted perils” in your policy document.

These are stipulated so that you, the policyholder, know the exact extent of your cover. Normal excepted perils include wars and riots – yet these are often covered by the South African Special Risk Insurance Association (SASRIA), to whom goes a portion of your premium.

Insurable perils are fortuitous or perils that arise out of chance and are not deliberate. This means that if you are insured for fire, then you can claim if your car fire was caused by lightning but not if it was caused by arson. Other accepted perils are wear and tear, rust, and mechanical breakdown. These are considered acceptable perils as they are uninsurable.

Special perils
Outside of the normally accepted car insurance perils, such as fire, storm, hail, collision, theft, hijackings and third party liability, are special perils. Tidal waves, landslides, and falling debris are all types of special perils. These can be added to your cover for an additional premium.

If a special peril falls under the specific exceptions portion of your insurance policy, these cannot be included in your cover, even for a special premium. Certain types of specific exceptions are damage caused while you were taking part in a riot, if you were driving without a license, using your car in foreign countries or racing your car. Check you policy document for these to know exactly what you are not, under any circumstances, covered for.
