Claim Checklist: What your insurer will ask before processing a claim
Friday, 20 November 2009 12:09
Before your insurance company will validate any claim you make on your car insurance, they’ll check whether it meets the criteria. This initial examination checklist is the first obstacle on the path to putting that well-earned insurance policy to good use. Whether you’re claiming for accidental damage, theft or break-in, you’ll need to answer these questions.

Is the policy still active or in force? This doesn’t only refer to whether or not you’ve cancelled the policy, but if all your premiums have been paid. If you’ve defaulted on a payment they could consider this a breach. They will also check the expiry date of your policy to determine that you’re legally within your right to claim.

Is the loss and peril covered in the policy? If you are not covered for what you are claiming for, you cannot logically make a claim. If your insurance is for third-party, fire and theft, you can’t claim for accidental damage. If you’re not insured for fire, you can’t claim for it.

Is the property covered? If your car isn’t covered by the policy… it means you’re not insured. If the property is covered, have you carried out your obligations? This means installing the correct security measures that were stipulated in the agreement and making all your payments. ??Have you violated any conditions of the contract? Certain conditions, such as keeping your laptop in the boot of the car, must be kept if you want to claim. The insurer will also check for fowl play. Is there anything suspicious surrounding the claim? If your insurer suspects fraud, an investigation will ensue.

After all these questions have been answered by the assessor either the claim will be validated or a further assessment will begin to determine damages and their values.
