Nothing says ruined camping trip like stolen caravan contents, or damage to your mobile accommodation, whether it be fire, theft or third party damage. Getting your caravan insured should be as compulsory as getting your car insured, even though you use your caravan less than your car.
Similar to car insurance, caravan insurance is covered for accidental or malicious damage, theft and storm damage. Because it’s your home on the mover, your caravan should be insured for the contents inside of it as well, with caravan contents insurance, including your appliances, bedding, clothing, tents and accessories.
Your caravan should be insured for market value and not retail value as most insurers will only pay out the value of the caravan at the time of damage or theft. Like cars, caravans depreciate with age (perhaps not as rapidly), which makes insuring for retail value a waste of money.
Make sure to update your policy before any trip to insure your covered for any new additions to it, whether they be to the structure or contents. Also make sure that the caravan is roadworthy. An insurance company can reject any claim to a car or caravan for being unroadworthy, even if the state of the caravan was not the cause of the damage. Especially check the tyres as these are often the cause of damage.
Some insurers specialise in caravan and mobile home insurance, which makes their policies more comprehensive. Don’t forget, though, most insurers offer discounts for holding more than policy with them.
