Car Accident Statistics - 15 Sep 2009 08:24

Unlike many an overseas country, South African car insurance is still left up to the discretion of drivers. Although comprehensive insurance is compulsory for financed vehicles, many drivers choose to skimp on the expense they feel is redundant. While this is a matter of personal choice, it could one day have an impact on you and your pristine car.

About 57 percent of all accidents are a result of human error. This means that it is not the condition of the road or vehicle or other form of intervention that causes the accident, but rather a distracted or absent-minded driver.

During the accidents that occur every day on our roads, an average of 36 people die. This according to Arrive Alive South Africa, is a result of the 90 percent of drivers not heeding the laws of the road.

These accidents cost about R35 billion each year. If the accident trend increases, so do our insurance premiums, especially if some parties to the accident are not insured. The loss cannot be reclaimed and insurers suffer more loss.

About 80 percent of drivers disregard the speed limit, and that’s only based on the number of recorded incidents. Speeding remains one of the top causes of road accidents in South Africa.

While this, you argue, may exclude you as you adherently follow all road regulations and pay your premiums, the driver who careens into you may not. These stats emphasise the importance of car insurance. Make sure you’re covered adequately.
