This year both KwaZulu Natal and Klerksdorp experienced devastating hail storms that claimed lives. More than 20 cm of hail fell in less than an hour in Klerksdorp, whil damages tallying into the millions was suffered by KwaZulu Natal. The inevitability of damage as a result of rain should see you check your car insurance policy to determine whether or not you’re covered in such an event.

The summer season, particularly in Johannesburg, is infamous for its sudden onset hail storms. The probability of being caught during a storm is likely, so check your insurance policy to make sure your covered for the damages that will result.

Some short-term insurers’ policies, such as Mutual & Federal’s Allsure, automatically include hail damage, but you must check if you’re covered otherwise getting caught in the rain could financially cripple you. Some insurers are able to offset the risk associated with the unpredictability and devastating nature of storms.

Check too the extent to which you are covered and the excess you’ll have to pay on such damages. With millions of Rands in damage each year as a result of storms, its essential to check your insurance policy for any ‘acts of god’ exclusions, and clarify with your insurer whether hail is considered a part of this.
